Vikes Trounce Tyner 68-47, Meet Plymouth
Employing the fast break with all its deadliness and controlling the backboards with ease, the LaPaz Vikings became the county tourney's first winners last night with an easy 68-47 win over Tyner. The Vikes next opponent is Plymouth, which drew a first round bye.
The game was surprisingly simple with Tyner ace Dick Balke's 10 points in the first quarter the only bright spot in the Redmen picture. Even with this herculean effort, the Tyner team led by no more than 16-15 at the end of the first stanza.
After "Porky" Davenport connected on two straight drive under shots to open the second quarter and put the Vikes ahead 19-16, the issue was never in doubt. Davenport added four markers. Dick Rash plunked in a fielder and a free toss, and Rex Figg drove under to hand the LaPaz speedsters a 28-20 lead midway in the period.
The halftime score was 34-24 in favor of LaPaz. Following the intermission, the Vikes continued where they left off, tipping a pair of buckets and scoring four more points to led 42-26 while Tyner netted a pair of free throws.
Rash added a free throw and Louie Ecker countered with a basket and a charity toss and Jim Waller with a long one hander for Tyner. The Vikes then poured in four straight baskets through the riddled Tyner defense to end the third quarter with a 51-31 lead.
With reserves taking command of both team's lineups the final quarter took on the aspects of a "B" team affair. LaPaz increased their margin by one point as they reached the 60-mark with four minutes to go in the ballgame and held on.
Davenport was high scorer for the winners with 18 tallies while Balke had 14 for Tyner. Davenport had the best shooting percentage of the regulars with five out of 15 from the field. For LaPaz Rash had four for eleven. Glenn Baker four for eleven and Figg four for 17. Balke had five for 16 and Andy Lemert four for 17 for the Tyner cause.
Collectively, the Vikings hit 22 out of 86 for a 25.6 percentage and Tyner had 17 out of 61 for 26.6 percent. The percentage aptly show the clearcut Viking advantage in controlling the ball, shooting a poorer percentage but getting a greater number of shots.

Center Nips Redmen
Richland Center, Feb.7 - A red hot shooting percentage of 38 percent on their familiar home floor was the only thing that saved Richland Center from defeat last night as they nipped Tyner 57-53.
The Redmen's record is nine and seven after their first loss in seven regular scheduled games. In the first meeting between the two teams the Wildcats won out 58-56.
Tyner employed their usual defense in good stead during the first three quarters and led at the half 25-22. Richland Center knotted the count at 36 all on a desperation shot by Larry Kanouse to pull up with the visiting Redmen for the first time in the game.
Tyner went out in front then until Center tied the score again at 45 all and went ahead a moment later at 55-51. Earl Smith hit a fielder to aid the Tyner cause but the Wildcats held the ball well enough to force Dick Balke from the game on five fouls and held the Redmen scoreless for the final two minutes. Center scored one more bucket to make the final score read 57-53.
Lefthanded Kanouse wound up with high point honors on his ten fielders and four free tosses while Tyner's Balke had only one point less at 23.
Center made a sweep of the evening's events by copping the "B" team game 40-30.

Tyner Trounces Grovertown
Scorching their familiar home baskets for 46 points in the final half, the Tyner Redmen upended Starke county rival, Grovertown in a rough 74-56 decision last night. Tyner now claims a 10 and seven mark while Grover stands pat at nine and nine.
Three technicals, two to the hosts and one to the visiting Rams were indications of the hotly contested racehorse style ball game. Tyner emerged from their tight defensive game to put on a shooting show before the packed house.
The first half was nip and tuck. Grovertown's last moment of glory was their 21-18 lead shortly before the half ended. At this point the Tyner club scored 10 markers against the Rams single two points and continued the torrid pace in the second half.
As usual Grover's Jim Howard was the individual star with 25 points, while Earl Smith drove under repeatly to post 18 for Tyner, and Dick Balke accounted for 20 Tyner points.
Tyner dropped the "B" team event 40-35.
