editorial

A few years ago a poll was taken among the students of the schools in the United States to find out who the heroes of the youth of the United States were. The results showed that George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were tops. Yet, not too long ago, that same poll was taken among the youth of the schools and they found that the young students choose modern heroes like Eddie Rickenbacker, Babe Ruth, Red Granger, etc.
I am not saying that our modern heroes are not to be recognized. At the same time let us keep in mind those of our early American history who helped to establish and instill in us the principles and ideals upon which our democratic country was founded. It is necessary for us to remember the deeds of George Washington and the rise of Abraham Lincoln as their doings and records are useful in comparison to our modern times. We must NEVER forget the great things that

PREVIOUS
they did when they were president of the United States and things that were equally as great when they were not in office. We must remember the heroic deeds of Washington and his men on the battle ground of Valley Forge and his exploits through the wilderness to conquer the French in the French and Indian War. Still, too, let us remember the famous speech that "Honest Abe" made at Gettysburg.
While we must remember the fine deeds that were done in this century, let us always remember George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and other men of times gone by so "that these men shall not have died in vain."
