Tyner's Redmen 'upset' a strong Culver five, 52 to 50 in an opening round game in the sectional tournament yesterday.
Tyner turned on their guns at the beginning of the game and led 13 to 7 at the end of the first quarter and 27 to 25 by halftime. Culver bounced back in the third quarter and had a three point margin, 43 to 40 at the end of the period.
Sophomore Larry Lemert opened up the final stanza for Tyner, with two buckets under the basket, but Ed Davis of Culver popped one in from under the basket to retain a 45 to 44 lead for the Indians. A free toss tied up the game and a tipin by Jim Waller put the Redmen in the lead temporarily.
A Culver charity and a one hander by Lou Ecker, and two charities by Redmen put Tyner ahead 51-48 with three minutes to go in the quarter. Tyner had plenty of chances to toss from the charity stripe, as Culver fouled in the attempt to get the ball, but the Tyner team elected to take the ball out of bounds.
Bill Snyder plunked in the last Culver basket, to make it 51-50, Tyner and Earl Smith hit a free toss after the final gun to give the final reading.
Tyner's fourth quarter slurge was accomplished without the services of star Dick Balke. The center fouled out before 30 seconds ticked away in the quarter. He netted 29 points and high point honors. Except for one free throw he made all of Tyner's third period points.
High point man for Culver was Jim Kowatch with 12, followed by Al Crabb and Ed Davis with 11 apiece.

Argos 57, Tyner 37

Argos Dragons left very little doubt last evening that they meant business and wanted a semi-final berth when they soundly trounced the Tyner Redmen, 57-37. It was rather an anti-climax to the fast moving tilts which preceded the nightcap performance.
The Redmen who had conquered the Culver Indians in the afternoon just couldn't get going after Argos turned loose a barrage of baskets early in the game.
Argos opened with buckets by Jerry Carpenter, and George Shunk. Earl Smith added two free throws for Tyner and then the Dragons added 10 straight points and a 14-2 lead.
It did get close in the second quarter when Tyner narrowed the lead to 19-16, but it was shortlived. Argos commanded a 26-19 lead at halftime and from there on it was the county champs all the way.
Sparking the balanced Argos attack during the first half were Shunk withsix points, Max Hagen with five, Don Schultz with six and Jerry Carpenter with seven. Smith collected 10 points for Tyner during the first two periods.
The Dragons, continued to pour it on and by the end of the third quarter the scoreboard read, 44-26 Argos. Argos hit from all angles during the final 10 minutes.
Hagen with 15 points , Shunk with nine, Schultz with 10 and Carpenter with 11 featured the balanced Argos scoring. Smith had 15 points for Tyner.
