Tyner, Feb. 13 - Tyner's up and coming Redmen added another impressive pre sectional win last night as they nipped Argos 56-55 before a packed Redman tepee. Tyner scored on 39 percent of their shots compared to the Argos mark of 29 percent.
The win brought the amazing Redmen's record up to 11-7 and clears their regularly scheduled card. Argos now has a 14 and six mark, with Lakeville yet to play before next week's big show at Plymouth.
Last night's thriller found Tyner trailing 47-35 at the end of the third quarter and seemingly outclassed by a smooth passing bunch of Dragon invaders who were cashing in on the height of George Shunk and Don Shultz their twin skyscrapers.
However, the inspired Redmen brought the ball down the floor three times and scored a like number of times on a Dick Balke tipin, a two pointer from underneath by Charles Jones and a driving one hander by Earl Smith. Argos found their lead whittled to 42-41 with a little over a minute gone in the period and still no more than one shot projected at the Argos hoop.
Shunk added a free throw and basket to ease the Dragon situation somewhat, but at this point the Redmen broke loose with tem straight markers to grab a commanding 51-45 lead with about two and a half minutes left to play.
Hagen scored a single pointer for Argos and Tyner found Balke open under the basket to produce a 53-48 score. Hagen added a one hander and Jerry Carpenter did, likewise to put the Argos team a single point behind.
The final minute started with a new ball game as Balke fouled Shunk and the Argos lad responded with a free toss to knot the score at 53 all. Shunk fouled out on the next round and following a timeout, the veteran Tyner center rolled in his charity attempt.
After Argos lost the ball on a bad pass, Tyner scored the winning basket when Joe Bottorff, sophomore, five foot six inch guard drove through the riddled Dragon defense to make the score 56-53 with only a few seconds left. Hagen scored the final Argos tally.
Shunk had 17 and Hagen 16 to pace the Argos scorers, while Smith with 15 and Balke with 14 led Tyner.
Tyner routed the Argos "B" team representatives 54-32.

Before the start of the varsity contest the Tyner high school band under the directon of Mrs. Leo Crabb, put on an impressive marching display.

Culver Over Tyner

Another toughie because of the nonexistance of any previous meeting to stand on. However, the Maxinkuckee Indians deserve the nod after impressive late wins over Nappanee and Mishawaka.
Tyner also claims late wins over Grovertown and Argos, but the added floor space in the Plymouth gym favors the fast breaking Indians. Both teams leave a strong balanced scoring attack.
Culver's main problem will probably be finding a way to put a leash on Tyner's Dick Balke. Crafty Coach Red Sering's charges lack height, but fit together to form one of the smoothest working five in the area.
The Indian's tough schedule called for four engagements with South Bend teams, and two of their six losses came there. Culver started strong with four straight wins dropped two to Michigan City and John Adams, and then swept through seven more before county tourney time , when they lost in the semifinal round 47-45 to LaPaz.
Something resembling shell shock must have hit the Indian team after the tourney, for in their next five starts they were held to unimpressive wins over Bremen and Bourbon and three losses to Riley, Lakeville, and Delphi.
However, full evidence of their recovery came in their 71-66 win over rangy Mishawaka, and 58-50 blasting of touted Nappanee, which gained them final record to 14 and six.
Tyner like Culver is somewhat short on reserve power, but as of late have made a name for themselves, and Coach Leo Crabb's boys are eager to make the fans forget their 68-47 loss to LaPaz in the county tourney, the heaviest victory margin registered in the January classic.
At the present time the Tyner team is at the peak of its power, a glance at the records reveal in its six opening engagements, Tyner won only two, although three losses were by two and one point margins.
A sweep of honors in the West tourney, helped pull the Redmen standard up to six and six and after the LaPaz rout, the Redmen have won six out of their last seven starts including a four-point loss to Richland Center and wins over Hamlet, West, Grovertown and Argos.
