Tyner Drops Grover 36-28 in Rough Tilt

In a rough and tumble battle with emphasis on the defense, Tyner dropped Grovertown by a 36 to 28 score last night at West High. Personal fouls were cheap, especially in the first half, when nine players on the two teams had at least a pair of fouls. In the second half the game leveled off somewhat. Grovertown had a game total of 17 compared to Tyner's 16.
The Redmen had to come from behind to win. Trailing at the first period mark 12 to 9, they grabbed the lead and gradually increased the margin. A free throw by Louie Ecker and a one hander by Earl Smith tied the score at 12 all to start the second period.
Tyner takes lead after another exchange of free throws, the Redmen soared ahead on a bucket by Smith and a one pointer by Larry Lemert. Jim Howard, Grovertown's main hope narrowed the margin with a beautiful one hander but, following a timeout Dick Balke sunk a one hander to make it 18 to 15 and end the first half action.
The third quarter looked like a personnel duel between Balke and Howard with the Tyner lad winning out temporarily before he acquired his fourth foul in the process and fouled out early in the final quarter.
Balke connected for two baskets to Howard's one to open the second half and following a brief display of temper by two Ram regulars a pair of free tosses gave Tyner a 24-17 lead.
Balke fouls out. With Balke's fine defense work gone for the Tyner cause, Howard broke loose and narrowed the margin almost single-handed with some deadly shooting to 31 to 26 at the third quarter mark.
However, the Redmen's depth and speed proved too much for the Rams to overcome, and the fourth quarter developed into a vain attempt for Howard and company to close the gap.
Howard captured high scoring honors with 22 points, while Balke had nine to lead the Redmen's well balanced attack.
Grovertown won the "B" team affair 37-19.
