Dick Balke's basket from under the hoop with five seconds to go handed Tyner's Redmen the West High four-way tournament trophy last night as they edged Grovertown 38-37 after a stiff fourth quarter bid by the Rams. In the consolation affair West downed Leiters Ford handily 40-25.

Leading by a six-point margin 33-27 going into the last quarter the erstwhile driving and running Redmen decided to slow the game down with a stall. The policy looked successful for the first three minutes as neither team scored.

But the Rams capable Jim Howard rebounded the first two of a chain of five straight buckets he scored in the final stanza and narrowed the margin to 33-31 by a timeout at the four-minute mark.
Tyner missed a free throw before Howard knotted the count with a long onehander and following a Tyner free throw, the Grover ace put the Rams out in front 35-34 with another push shot for the first time since the first half. Redman Earl Smith drove under to recapture the spread.
The Rams were unable to stop this stall until 15 seconds were left and then they picked off a bad pass and converted it into what appeared to be the winning basket with Howard on the scoring end with a one hand swisher from the side. Lou Ecker missed a chance to send the game into overtime before blond headed Balke scored with the all-important rebound shot for the Tyner lads.
The initial period of the game was of the racehorse tourney style with Howard's three straight buckets midway in the quarter highlighting action and contributing in the 17-13 Ram lead.
Both teams lapsed into a shooting freezeup in the second quarter as Grover found the mark on one of 12 shots and Tyner hit four out of 21. The last 19 attempts from the field of the two teams in this quarter were unsuccessful. Tyner edged up to a 21 tie by default.
Tyner Grabs Lead The third quarter was the Redmen's splurge as they hit three baskets to grab a 27-21 lead and held the fort with a 33-27 lead at the end of the period while the Rams were still in the throes of the second period slump.
